Getting Ahold of Myself

Ok, now that Adriaan helped me figure out the backslash issue (althought as Dirk points out, even that is not as perfect.), I was able to get a little more work done.. this time on the Mac. the going is slow, but it may be possible.

I've been making notes of all the things I want to do, and all the features I want on my software (that I used to have on the Windows) and I'm going to start going through it in a calm, controled manner.

Maybe the functions that I can't find in existing apps will lead me to be a builder of Mac apps.

A sneak preview of the list, things that I am sure exist, but I can't seem to find.

1. An ftp client that:

  • Supports active AND passive transfers. (I can't find a switch on Transmit or NetFinder)

  • Has two windows, navigational directory trees for both local and remote computers (Fetch has active transfer, but only shows the remote computer)

  • Remembers shortcuts of recently visited directories, so I can navigate without going up and down through the directories. (Transmit, NetFinder, Fetch all only allow me to skip backward.. for example, I can go from /var/site/html/about/products/ to /var/site/html/ but *not* from /var/site/html/about/products/ to /var/site/cgi-bin/somescript/lib/

  • Has a left arrow button to tranfer from remote to local and a right arrow button to transfer from local to remote, or some variation thereof. (I can't find any transfer button in Transmit so I have been resorting to dragging and dropping them from one computer to the other!)

Try RBrowser (Lite)

macupdate.com

and make bookmarks of your paths... in Transmit.

BTW, has Apple fixed the native ftp client to be able to write to FTP servers in Panther?

If that's the case, you don't need anything else. Just mount the server on the desktop, make aliases in Favourites blah blah
