Peanuts

peanuts

The peanuts I had been waiting all summer for are now gone, and I have a stomach ache. Needless to say, the harvest was lacking in quantity, and even in quality, but it was a very satisfying snack.

yay - peanuts!
I had picked up 2 of the bushes before we travelled. Not a big harvest - but was fun to eat. When I came back, the rest of the rows were gone! Some kind of animal ate it all. Strange. The seeds were from Japan. I think they might need a longer growing season. Not sure if NJ weather is so great for them. Will try again next year.

How did you eat them? De to the humid weather here, I ended up just boiling them with salt, rather than drying.

I had a bigger harvest than is shown in the photo - enough to keep me full for two days on peanuts alone. The problem is that I also eat the shells. When they are boiled it is even easier than when they are dried and roasted.

This time I ate too many at once and have been suffering the consiquences of too much fiberous material in my diet.

I can't wait for the bloody stools to stop!

Ooops! Maybe I shouldn't have said that...

It's a bit off topic, or maybe not at all, but I just came across a video of a John Hartford song that I thought you would appreciate, Kevin.

So, if you have a moment, listen to Hartford sing "In Tall Buildings." In my opinion, it could serve as a theme song to "Bastish.net," assuming your rich site even needed such a thing.

I hope you enjoy it.

WTF?! They grow underground? What trickery is this. Three decades of snacking and now I find out?

TMI Kevin TMI : )

I read that I had to dry them...so I let them out to dry under the sun and just ate them raw. I didnt harvest them all. I will plan better next year. I wasnt too impressed with the size of them either. I think they need better soil ...sandy kind. I remember eating boiled peanuts as a kid...that was tasty.

@Phil

Thanks for the link. I like the song. I feel bad that it made you think of me... I wish it would have made you think of everyone :)

@ Dan R.

Yes, they grow underground. I did not know either. All the bean plants that I knew grew above ground, so for a while, when the other beans were growing pods, I was disapointed to see nothing from the peanuts. I looked it up though and fond that there may be something down there.

@Weekend farmer:

Oooooooohhhhh. There is a lot of sandy soil here! Our rice paddy is on extremely sandy soil, which is why it does not hold water well. Maybe instead of putting soy beans on the space between paddies (traditional way in Japan), we will try peanuts. Do you have a link to a source that made you think that? VERY interested.
