Survivor addiction

Well, I had big plans and lots to do tonight. I was going to get this site one step closer to the time when I never have to touch it except to input a post... but then I found Survivor videos in my mailbox. I guess I wont be working on the site for a while.

***

Although... I did get a chance to make it a little better looking in a Mozilla / Netscape browser. I was going to fix it for netscape 4 also, but then I decided it is not worth my time to fix it for a piece of crap like that. If you are reading this with a netscape 4 browser, it must look like crap.

***

I did get a chance to go running last night for about an hour, mainly becasue I was stressed and couldnt sleep so I decided to jog to get tired... instead I just got a terrible sore throat and cold.

***

Following up on the priorities topic... Although that was about a trivial topic like vacuming my apartment, I really do wonder what should I be putting priority on now in my life. Should I spend so much time concentrating on work. The main goal is to "get excellent" at something. One way is definatly to work hard at it in my job, but when I spend the weekend doing that, I am sacrificing time that could be used for my own endevors. Even though many of them would be very similar to my work, should i focus on them more? But if I do, I am sacrificing what I could gain from getting that little bit extra out of a project I am working on for the company... that little bit extra could mean a whole lot in terms of reputation and gained skills... and even more important, am I sacrificing a life? Am I sacrificing the chance to do things I like like Kayak and camp and play guitar?

A friend was shoked to hear that I thought about work alot while we were hiking. He never thought about it once he says. Is that normal, am I too much of a freak when it comes to that?

ohhh.... Just had a little earth quake....

Jon Southwell (from semthe high school where I once had a record with Jon in some obscure relay race that only happens once every so many years in a little known invitational) is coming to Tokyo for the Holiday, so I guess I wont be going Kayaking, unless he remembers to pack one. He mentioned climbing Fuji, but I have only heard terrible things about it, so I pass.

Peace Climb

Representatives of 5 nations gathered Sunday to climb a mountain (the Japanese term for "hiking" translates directly to "mountain climbing") and drink beer, all in the name of world peace. After a day of climbing we all hopped on a train and then another train and then another train and then walked alot all in the name of eating little sparrows and other Guri-like creatures. Thanks to Nobu-san for that.

The climb itself went without major incident, despite the fact that the guide was drunk and lost. Dr. JJ had a minor knee injury, which seemed to get much better when the beer appeared later. Of course it could have been the power of Kumiko's magic massage.

I didn't get a chance to add any captions to the photos, and I was too lazy to put them in any particular order... Live with it.

New toys

I just added some new toys to the site. So sorry for you all because only I can see them. Maybe in the future if any of you reach security status 'bastish' You will be able to see them also.

Guri has been acting strange lately. She doesn't scream when I pick her up, in fact, she sits there quietly and lets me rub not just her head, but her stomach and back and under her wings and chest. She has been pretty sticky lately.

It is amazing how much she is like a little kid. I don't notice so much because I never had any younger brothers or sisters (except that one) but I noticed it tonght when pastor's kid was screaming all through the service, until his mom stoped playing the organ to pick him up. Kind of like Guri in the morning. She sits next to the pillow (sometimes right on the the pillow next to my face) and screams and screams for as long as it takes for me to wake up, then as soon as I am awake, and she can get on my soulder she stops screaming.

2:00am and I have to be up early for the big mountain climbing event. I guess I better quit working on the site and get to sleep... if I can after 4 pots of tea.

Anti-cipation

I have about had it with cipations!!!

***

In only two days the nifty "Archive" function I have built in will kick into effect. This only happens though if I have at least 7 days worth of posts by that time

***

My cheek is a little better, still a little sore.

***

Promised Kazuyo and Dr. JJ I would go mountain climibing with them Sunday, then they told me they were meeting at the station at 8am. Maybe I should bring Guri in her outing basket.

***

The login buttons don't work yet, so you can push them all you want and aint nothin gonna happen. Although i hope to get them in line soon. Maybe the mystery fan who has visted three days in a row now will register.

Unnhhh

Unnhhh is what I say when I put anything in my mouth or even just open it to speak today. I woke up a few days ago with a large piece of my right inner-cheek ripped off, just a 3 centemeter piece of flesh dangling. I am not sure if I bit it in my sleep, or if this is the work of Guri. Anyway, it was fine for about to days, then yesterday I notice that it was not getting any better, rather worse of course due to the hot, steamy, sexiness of the inside of my mouth. Today it is even worse and the pain has spread o the entire right side of my mouth, and even my tounge hurts. I have some ointment to put on it, but the directons just say to "apply" several times a day. It is basically a tube of vasiline like gell. Try to "apply" vasaline to a wet surface...
Anyway, that almost used up my health budget for this year. I already bought eye drops for about 900 yen a few months ago when I had a hideous eye desease. Add today's 600 yen for the gell, and I can only afford 1500 yen more for health care this year. I hope nothing bad happens to me.

I have been watching The Last Temptation of ChristGoogle in nightly installments for the last couple nights. I don't know why I never saw such a famous movie before. Anyway, I guess it was famous becasue it was so controversial, and I can see what some people may not like, but I don't really understand why it is something that should be banned by the pope. (I don't know where it was banned, just that it was banned).

It is the first time I have ever heard any attempt to visualize what life must have been like back in the day, and what Jesus was like as a "man" because he was a man as well, but it seems that all anyone ever focused on in school and church is the God part.

I often wonder how the "temptation in the desert" could have been much of a temptation... I mean the devil tried to tempt him with power over the world? It is like someone trying to tempt me with a pot of tea, when I have 5 pots every night as it is. Not much of a temtation. The movie showed how Jesus as a man was succeptible to temptation. I think actually seeing that aspect is a good thing fro Christians... simply becasue if we only see him as God, the fact that he actaully was tempted looses all meaning.

I thinkhowever, that alot of people must have been offended at the fact that he was portrayed as kind of a naive, dim-wit confused chap who didn't really know what was going on most of the time. Also it seemed that the point of the movie was that he was just a regular guy who had dilusions of or was unsure of his being God. This is something that I don't buy... I guess becuase knowing everything and not knowing tht he was God just doesn't make any sense. But that is another story. And there is way to much about that movie to write about here.

I have used up my time for today. I would go to bed but I don't know that I can sleep with this pain...

Time for a drink?

The only reason I am writing tonight is that I missed the hashA drinking club with a running problem. I was stuck at work too late again, so wound up missing the only night I am alowed to drink, on probably the day I most want to have a nice soothing beer. So, I broke my rule about no drinking at home... the new rule is no drinking at home unless it is Wednesday (hash> day). I guess it wil give me more time to sit down and work on my new little project here... but I really wanted to hash tonight.. with customers complaining about their email and my only current "official" project (meaning a project with a deadline as opposed to projects to be done 'when there is free time' that really require official status) falling behind.. despite the fact that I started this personal web site at the same time, and have already progressed way beyond the work project, out-pacing it by over a week, even though the time-spent ratio favours the work project about 10 to 1. (ten hours a day for work... one for my own project) Of course, without the research I did for the work project, I would not have been able to make this site as it is, but it's just sad to me that if I had been doing the work project alone, it would have been complete a week ago... instead I have to rely on (and wait wait for and coash, and spend even more time than the amount of time it would take to do it myself) other people.... Makes me want a beer tonight.

And so I drink.

I havnt checked the full access reports yet (its only been one day since going live), but with just a quick skan of the logs, I notice that 3 people did access at least the top page (50% of hte site). If I assume one was mom and dad, the other was Tomoe, that means at least one person who I never told about the site found it somehow... wierd.

I guess I should not have had the beer tonight. It appears I would have been better off with tea.

From: Janet Cameron
Glad you have given up beer--it's a bad expensive habit. On the otherhand tea cures all sorts of stuff like death

Solutions

Well, I found the solution to my oversleeping problems lately. Instead of the normal radio show I have my alarm set with, I set it for a techno station that Guri seems to hate. As soon as the alarm goes off, playing that techno, Guri starts screeching, and I am in the office by 9:00.

Speaking of solutions, there are quite a few in this Chapter 3: SOAP BasicsBook excerpt at webreference.com from Professional XML Web Servicesabout the book. Just so you can see what type of things I find myself studying.

What the experts are saying about The Bastish-net

kevinwcam: have you seen the bastish-net?
tomoekawuk: what does that mean?
kevinwcam: bastish?
tomoekawuk: oh! you are the webnmaster of it?!
kevinwcam: Its my site.
tomoekawuk: that IS cool!

***

I noticed that there was a problem my site... that is I call it the bastish-net, yet its URL consisted of an IP number and some other crap... the SOLUTION? I bought my domain last night via netsol. And tonight, as of 9:12 p.m. bastish-net was officially live. Maybe the hardest part is done... considering that mom, maybe dad, and Tomoe are the only ones looking, I really don't need to make any improvements. Of course as you three will see when I get the obligatory "about" section done, the whole purpose of this site is to play and practice some of hte things that I can't use on clients sites for one reason or another.

A late start

Woke up late for work again. Third time in three days, (first three times ever) don't know what is going on, but can' t seem to get up.

Just found this article aobut web logsBlog Nation::Article describing the phenomenon of "blogging" at business2.com. I didn't know what I was getting into when I started making this site. I just wanted to have a place to practice, experiment, and at the same time make mommy happy with pictures and updates.

update: I have beeen looking around at alot of other web logs, and it appears the only thing they ever talk about is other weblogs. Apparently it is a huge addiction in the online world. I guess I should have known that being a "web developer" and all...

I don't know if you heard about the supermarket in the US that decided to have a special on fried chicken for Black History Month. It was most amazing that such an idea can get by all the people it takes to implement it with nobody noticing that maybe it is not a good one. Well, here is another example. It seems Ambercrombie & Fitch pulled a new line of t-shirtsWashington Post article after they realized that they were offensive to AsiansPhoto of offensive t-shirt. The t-shits are now selling for over $1,000 on ebay.

Is there a song popular in America now called "Lust for Christ"? It is a 'reamake' of Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life", and they play it quite often on the radio here. It's pretty suprising to hear 'Christian Rock' on the radio. I wonder if it is supposed to be a joke, or if they are just playing it becasue it's actually a good song. (hard to go wrong covering "Lust for Life")

A good motivating rain

It's amazing what I can get done when it rains. Not that I am usually so busy that I don't have time to sit in front of the computer all day... come to think of it I don't remember doing anything else for the last several weeks... but the rain does allow me to justify the complete lack of physical exertion... without it I would never have finished this first version of the bastish netif you are looking at this before I have actually moved it from the development server, this link doesn't work... but you are already here anyway so kick back and relax and enjoy commentary. It's like how I love long flights... where else can I feel totally free from guilt that I am doing absolutly nothing but kicking back with a pile of books, magazines, newspapers, and a non-stop flow of free booze?

I also probably would not have written so much for one day's post. But since this is my new toy, today's will be long and full of crap that nobody cares about.

I'm a couple day's late with this one, and I am sure everyone has heard of it since it was on the BBC (not just Japan) but it is still amazing, and I didn't even have a web site a few days ago so... Backpackers baffled by Bethlehem siegearticle on BBCi web-site. Since this obviously re-enforces the stereotype of a Japanese tourist that many non-Japanese (and Japanese as well) have, I have been trying to find some articles in the Japanese press about this, to see how they portray it, but no luck yet... probable because my Japanese search skill suck.

Van Morrisonanotated lyrics, explain everything from "Cyprus Avenue" to "Madame George" has a new CD coming out. Just heard one of the new songs on the Barakan BeatThe only radio show I know of here in Tokyo that I would say is worth listening too.. Does it really matter if it was any good? I'll be getting the cd when it comes to the stores.

Note to myself: buy a mini water heaterphoto of mini water heater. (I've never seen one of these in the US) ASAP!!! Since I quit drinking beer at home, thinking I could save 500 yen/day, I am afraid that I am actually spending more on gas to heat up the 5+ kettles of tea. (and that is on weeknights... today, having only left the house once (to buy more tea) I drank over 13...
